Notes

One of the defining features of Rasori's newspaper is its vigorous polemic against the Church and religion in general. This attracted the criticism of those within the democratic movement who preferred a more cautious approach to matters of religion. Rasori published this translation of a report that had appeared in the Republicain to rebuff such critiques and demonstrate that the clergy posed a political threat to the new republican order.

The translation features in the issue of 15 Thermidor/2 August 1796, n. 21, pp. 158-61.
