Notes
Two parts, three volumes. An earlier translation of the first six books of the Confessions, followed by the Reveries, was published by Bew in 1783 (probably based on Les Confessions de J.J. Rousseau, suivies des Rêveries du promeneur solitaire, Geneva, 1782). The remaining six book appeared in French in 1789. For the present edition, the same first six books and the Reveries were retranslated. Added to that was a collection of letters (based on Moultou's edition of 1789?) in three volumes. The latter are accompanied by translator's preface. Barbier has argued that the anonymous translation is the work of William Combe. See C.P. Barbier, 'Letters of an Italian nun and an English gentleman', Revue de Littérature Comparée, vol. 28 (Jan 1, 1954). Review in Analytical Review, vol. IX (1791), p. 579, heavily critical of the work.
