Notes

'Printed by order of the London Corresponding Society'. Prince one penny. This is chapter 15 of Volney's The Ruins, in which the people confronts the priests and the civil governors in order to emancipate itself from their rule. Identical translation to the one in the pamphlet 'An appeal to the inhabitants of Birmingham' and the reprint in Pig's meat. The opening paragraphs in this version are new. First sentence: 'The following piece shews the omnipotent powers of a nation, when it unites to overthrow Tyranny. Before the Revolution of 1789, Tyranny threatened to shallow Humanity, and founded its claim upon precedent'. Undated, but found 'among documents from 1798'. Online accessible on Gale (ECCO).
