Notes

Fantin-Desodoards' multi-volume 'Histoire philosophique' (1796–1801) was largely drawn from articles published in 1794 in Jean-Louis Carra and Louis-Sébastien Mercier's journal, Les Annales patriotiques et littéraires. In each new and "corrected" edition, Fantin-Desodoards would alter the text in response to political changes and his own career strategies, initially supporting the national programme of dejacobinization before taking a more consensual approach that favoured the reconciliation of all parties.

For more on the history of this text, see Jean-Luc Chappey, "L’Histoire philosophique de la Révolution de France de Fantin-Desodoards. Dynamiques croisées entre statut d’historien et identité politique", in Philippe Bourdin (dir.), 'La Révolution, 1789-1871, écriture d’une histoire immédiate' (2008), pp.129-55; and Olivier Ritz, "L’an IX ou l’historiographie de la Révolution en débat" (CIHRF 10, 2016).
