Notes
Brissot's account of America was written before the revolution as a lesson in liberty for the European people. Barlow translated the second, corrected edition, published in 1791 with a new, revised preface by the author explicitly referencing the revolution in France. The third chapter is a translation of Brissot & Clavière's De la France et des États-Unis (including Barlow's biography of Brissot), which had previously been published separately. The translator in his preface sings praises to Brissot, whom he calls an indefatigable defender of the rights of mankind. Brissot comments on the text in his autobiography, saying that France ought to connect itself with the free Americans. A second edition with new paratextual material appeared in 1794.
