Notes
Translation of Condorcet's work, also containing Holcroft's translation of Voltaire's memoirs (first published 1785).
Review in Analytical review shows that the book met with indignation and resistance even in dissenting circles.
AR, vol. 8 (1790), p. 284: 'But is is clearly evident, that novelty of information relative to Voltaire, was not the author's motive in publishing his life. He has made it a convenient vehicle for publishing his own religious and political sentiments, which, we fear, will be thought by many more licentious and extravagant than those of his great original'. (....) Not content to correct the errors and expose the superstitions of a fraudulent and corrupt system (...), our author would destroy every form of religion, and break the tie which connects the human soul with the Deity'.
