Notes

Smith's first educational work, aimed at little girls. She wrote educational works out of necessity, after her radical political opinions had discredited her as a novelist.

The work is included here because it was translated to French at time of considerable debate about women's education. A few years later, Napoleonic legislation made women again more dependent on husbands and fathers.

Elizabeth A. Dolan has argued that Smith introduced a feminist perspective on motherhood in her educational works: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/240535053_COLLABORATIVE_MOTHERHOOD_MATERNAL_TEACHERS_AND_DYING_MOTHERS_IN_CHARLOTTE_SMITH%27S_CHILDREN%27S_BOOKS.
