Notes

Paine replies to four questions concerning the new French Constitution, posed to him by a friend. Condorcet's translation ("traduit sur le manuscrit par Condorcet") appeared in La Chronique du mois (May, June and July 1792).

Jean Delisle has tentatively identified the translator as Condorcet's wife, Sophie de Grouchy, ‘La marquise de Condorcet: l’aristocrate républicaine, la traductrice militante et philosophe’, in J.-P.
