Madame de Stael's first, self-published work, written at the age of 22, was a defence of Rousseau's life and works. Although it was published anonymously, its author announced herself to those in the know, as evidenced with the publication of a letter from Countess de Vassy to the Baroness in the 1789 corrected reissue with an author's preface – now with her name on the frontispiece as "par Mme la Baronne de S*** – which was also published in Lausanne by Jean Mourer. It was reissued in 1798 by Charles Pougens.
On some 1789 editions, instead of a publisher, was printed, "Au temple de la vertu. Chez le premier restaurateur de France", suggesting it may have been privately self-published. https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=ovQ5AAAAcAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false
This was a reference to her father, the finance minister, Jacques Necker, of whom she was inordinately proud. She would later hymn his praises in her biographical account of his role during the Revolution, Considérations sur les principaux événements de la Révolution Française (1818).
