An earlier translation of the original 1771 edition (without 'L'Homme de Fer, songe'), 'Memoirs of the Year Two Thousand Five Hundred', with translator's footnotes, was made by Dr. William Hooper in 1772. Hooper's translation was reissued in Philadelphia by Kelley in 1795, making it the first utopian novel published in the US.
