Notes

Mirabeau's Discourse in Volume 1 (p. xvii-cxiii) was probably written in the first half of 1788 (Dendana, par. 28). It relates the history of England before the ascension of James I. Framed as a history of the English people opposing their monarchical oppressors in order to acquire liberty. Criticizes David Hume's History of England for its lack of support for the cause of liberty. Mirabeau also wrote footnotes to the first one hundred pages of the first volume.
