Paine's appeal for the proclamation of a new republic ('Appel en faveur de la république' ) appeared in the first issue of 'Le Républicain; ou le Défenseur du gouvernement Réprésentatif'. It was produced and published by the fledgling Société républicaine, which had only five members: Paine, Bonneville, the Condorcets and Achille-François de Lascaris, marquis du Châtelet (also known as Achille Duchâtelet). Duchâtelet signed the broadside (a legal requirement) and translated the text, which was inspired by Condorcet, printed by Bonneville, and pasted up across the streets of Paris. Paine indicates the translator's name in 'Opinion sur l'affaire de Louis Capet' (7 Jan 1793, but not read out until 19 Jan), p.3.
Paine's broadside daringly called for the King's banishment following his aborted flight to Varennes on 23 June, as a result of which, Paine argued, the King had effectively abdicated his regal power. He later reused it as part of his speech on 15 January 1793 calling for the king's banishment to America instead of execution.
