Three earlier French translations of Smith's work existed (1764, 1774-1775 and date unknown), although this is the only on to be based on the substantially revised seventh (and last) edition. De Grouchy's eight letters are intended as a commentary on Smith's work. According to Biziou, 'la marquise traduit, pour ainsi dire, la théorie des sentiments moraux en une théorie des sentiments républicains'. Review and extract in La Décade philosophique year VI/3, no. 26. Explicit comments in the latter on how the old translation was not sufficient anymore and a new version was in order.
