Notes

A work of enlightenment legal theory written by the Neapolitan lawyer and freemason, Filangieri, immediately popular across Europe upon publication. Its intention, well within the enlightenment mainstream, of reforming law on a rational basis had a radically republican thrust in the context of southern Italian aristocratic regimes. The book is a constitutional republican programme, inspired by the American revolution. The universalist claims of this legal system indicate a cosmopolitanism.
