Notes
Libel directed against Queen Marie Antoinette. The first half of this pamphlet is a translation from the Essai historique. The original preface was not translated and the names of the characters were reversed. The second half is new material elaborating on the same themes.
Gifford, the translator, was a supporter of Pitt's government and a loyalist who wrote against the French Revolution and the English Jacobins. The motives of his involvement in translating anti-monarchical French pamphlets are unclear.
