Summary (extracted citations)

Follows reports from Naples where republicans are persecuted and the king prepares for war, and about counter-revolutionary propaganda by priests.

Oriental tale of crazy despot who designs his dog as successor of the throne (parallel with Caligola and his horse). Mani-Guttù, wily prime minister, humours the king and becomes the de-facto ruler as Babouf the dog is ‘in sostanza un buonissimo cane, assai trattabile, e forse troppo docile’ (69).
