Notes

Edited version of 'The System of Nature' – "the source of Man's unhappiness is his ignorance of Nature" – making the same argument more effectively on less than a third of its pages. As Friedrich Melchior Grimm put it, "It is the System of Nature rid of its abstract and metaphysical ideas; it is atheism put in the reach of chambermaids and wigmakers".

For more on its genesis and reception, see Philipp Blom, 'Wicked Company' (2011).
