Notes

Published April-May 1790. The author's name, Andrea Giennaro Chiavacchi, is obviously a pseudonym, since he is described as a high functionary of the Vatican. Bérard supposes that in reality he was attached to the French embassy in Rome. The French text, written in Italy, is all probablity the original; therefore it is a pseudo-translation. The text was probably sent to Paris and published there. According to Bérard, the Paris editor of the text made it more radical, changing the tone from irreverent to menacing and adding the two prefaces. The first version must have been written in the winter of 1789-1790, whereas the revision must have taken place around April 1790. It was only performed after additional changes in 1793. Comments and edition in Suzanne Bérard, Le théâtre révolutionnaire de 1789 à 1794, p. 46-48; 275-328.
