Notes
This publication pretends to be the French translation of an English original published the year before in America. In reality the French text is the original project for a declaration of rights by Condorcet. It is accompanied by an English translation of the French original by Richard Gem. Catalogues often erroneously ascribe this translation to Filippo Mazzei. The identity of the translator was revealed by Jefferson who wrote it on one of his own copies of the text. He took it with him to Virginia where it may have influenced the drafting of the US Bill of Rights.
