Notes

The novel contains many of the typical subjects that lent the gothic novel its radical subtext, especially in the work of known progressive authors like Radcliffe. The translator was a noblewoman who lived a fashionable society life under the Directory. Translation announced in La Décade philosophique year IV/3, n. 78, p. 531. Review in Magasin encyclopédique, 1797, vol,2, p.526-530.
