Notes

Mercier is well disposed towards the causes of liberty and humanity but shuns radical opinions. The translator underlines his moderation in the preface. In the context of 1795 England, Mercier's work nevertheless had potential subversive qualities. Favourably reviewed in the Analytical Review (1795), vol.21, p.546.
