Notes
The source text is known as one the first British Jacobin novels. Cantwell was a radical translator who specialised in translating radical British texts into French. The present ranslation was announced in La Décade philosophique, year VI/3, n. 24, p. 372.
In the author's preface Holcroft stresses the novel's utility for moral education. Although the novel tells the story of particular heroes and their actions, he wants it to be taken as a representative of the wider human progress.
"Je considère tous les livres bien écrits qui discutent les actions des hommes, comme autant d'histoires des progrés de l'esprit humain" (xi).
