Notes

Holcroft describes transcribing the play together with his friend Bonneville while in Paris. The two attended multiple performances and memorised portions, transcribing after each viewing (see 'Memoirs of the Late Thomas Holcroft', III, IV, 126-7).

Subsidized by the Liberty Fund. According to Taylor the play did not have the same impact in London as in Paris since it lacked some of the original's more subversive elements. Taylor, The French Revolution and the London Stage, p. 40.
