Notes

Placeholder title. Translation (untitled) of Harrington published in Rutledge's journal Le Creuset. From 18th Century Translators Dictionnary: The translations from A System of Politics, which begin in the fifth issue, were unacknowledged and constituted only certain chapters rather than the entire work. Nonetheless, they are substantial and significant. https://eutec-project.it/translators/en-jean-jacques-rutledge.html. Translation was identified by Rachel Hammersley. She writes that Rutledge paraphrases Harrington's Oceana, whom he desribes as 'a great friend of liberty and social justice, who is no longer known', in the first four issues. From the fifth issue he embarks on a translation of Harrington's A System of Politics. See: French Revolutionaries and English Republicans: The Cordeliers Club, 1790-1794, p. 96.
