Son of a haberdasher from Cambrai. Apprenticed to Pierre-Michel Lamy from 1780 and in business from 1784. Suspended for publishing forbidden works in 1787 relating to the Assembly of Notables.His business was taken over by his widow Marie-Madeleine-Esther Philippon in collaboration with Jacques-Joseph Techener (1802–1873) who bought her out in 1828.
