Notes

Edwards was the son of a bookbinder and bookseller whose brothers were also involved in the book trade. The firm Edwards of Halifax was known for its artistry in the execution of three bookbinding techniques, including ornamental cover designs painted on the underside of transparent vellum.

His father set him up with his brother in John in London in 1784 as (William) Edwards & Sons, 102 Pall Mall. John died young and James became a reputed bookseller and book collector, specializing in the sale of private collections, especially foreign ones, making frequent trips abroad, including to Paris and Venice. He retired in 1804.
