Claude Arthus-Bertrand was born in Saint-Irénée (modern-day Lyon) to Claude Bertrand, a master carpenter in Lyon. His carte de sûreté (identity card distributed in Paris during the Reign of Terror) dated 9th August 1793 indicates that he was 23 years old and had been living in Paris for three years. At this time, he resided at Rue du Hurepoix, 19 and was working as a bookseller's apprentice.

In 1792, he was captain of the 19th Battalion of the Parisian National Guard; he took up numerous positions within this corps and became a member of its governing council in 1793. He was Commander of the 3rd Battalion of the 11th legion of the National Guard from January 1814 and was named Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur on 16th January 1816.

He is thought to have worked as a bookseller in his own right from no later than 1797. He took over Parisian bookseller François Buisson's stock in 1806, and that of Nicolas Desaint's widow just before September 1807. He became a patented (licensed) bookseller in Paris on 1st October 1812; his patent was first renewed on 15th March 1817, then again on 20th June 1820.

Arthus-Bertrand was a Freemason and a grand officer of the Grand Orient de France. He was also a member of the French Geographical Society; he was their bookseller and published their monthly bulletin. His bookselling patent was transferred to his son, Joseph-Jean-Baptiste Arthus-Bertrand (d. 1842) on 13th February 1834.

Claude Arthus-Bertrand died in 1840.
