Duplain came from a sharp-elbowed Lyonnais dynasty of publishers and booksellers. His cousin Joseph, who was accused of fraud in his dealings over pirated editions of the 'Encyclopédie', retired with a small fortune, a beautiful wife and a newly acquired aristocratic title. Their typographic symbol was an eagle with outstretched wings. Pierre Jacques specialized in 'under the counter' works until a lettre de cachet forced him to flee to Switzerland. In 1777, he turned up in Paris as a commissionnaire (literary agent) and clandestine dealer where he fought off bankruptcy by handling the most dangerous (and lucrative) kinds of forbidden books, and also worked as an agent for the STN.
A neighbour of Jean-Paul Marat and active member of the Cordeliers Club, he was recruited to the Paris Commune's notorious Comité de Surveillance on 10 August 1792 (often blamed for the September Massacres), and the Revolutionary Tribunal in March 1793.
