Notes

Born in France, Aubert moved to Livorno where he was employed from 1762 by the abbé Marco Coltellini to run his print shop, becoming its director two years later. They published the Italian edition of Diderot and d'Alembert's 'Encyclopédie' (1769-79) with the support of Grand Duke Leopold of Tuscany. Aubert was closely linked to the Milanese scene through his correspondence with the Verri brothers, having previously published Becaria's close friend Pietro Verri's 'Meditazioni sulla felicità' in 1763.

Aubert sometimes used the imprint, 'All'insegna della Verità'.
