Notes
Author of historical and political essays, and a prolific translator of English travel literature, including the voyages of Captain Cook. One of the main advocates for the American cause in France, he corresponded with Jefferson and contributed several articles on the United States to Charles-Joseph Panckoucke's 'Encyclopédie méthodique' (1784–1788), which influenced the democratic movement in Brabant (Belgium) in the years preceding the French Revolution. Buried in the Pantheon.
