Notes
Son of a wine merchant, Palloy was a mason, building contractor and self-styled 'architect-entrepreneur' and 'patriot Palloy', who made a revolutionary career out of its demolition. He became famous for the large sculpted (moulded and carved) models made from its huge stones, which he presented to new, local authorities all across France, charging them 'only' for the transport of their delivery by the 'apostles of Liberty'. The column that sits there today was inspired by one of his suggestions.
He later came to see himself as an "artiste patriote" and civic educator. Became involved in a poetic and political rivalry with the writer Florian during 1794 over the organisation of patriotic festivals and performance of hymns.
